After much deliberation, the recommendation for added sugars in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans remained the same at less than 10% of total calories per day starting at age two. Both the USDA and HHS encouraged further studies on added sugar, including those who hoped to see the guidelines for added sugar drop to less than 6% of total calories.

  • Sugar-free: less than 0.5 grams of sugars per labeled serving
  • Low sugar: 3 grams or less of sugar per serving
  • No sugar added: food in which sugar or no sugar-containing ingredient (concentrated fruit juice) is added during processing
  • Added sugars: sugars that are either added during the processing of foods or packaged as such
