TORONTO — Food waste specialist Flashfood has added another retail partner and reached a major milestone.

The company announced the week of Nov. 29 it has joined forces with Giant Eagle to help the retailer reduce its wasted food. And Flashfood has recently passed the 30 million pound mark in food saved from landfills.

Flashfood grocery store customers divert an average of 1,000 pounds of food from the trash every month, while saving shoppers close to $100 on their monthly grocery bill, according to the company.

Grocers partner with Flashfood to provide discounts up to 50% on foods nearing their best-by date. With the Flashfood app, consumers find a store, browse deals on fresh items like meat, produce, dairy,  bakery items, snacks and more -  all that are nearing their best-by dates.

Purchases are made directly through the app and customers then simply pick their order at Flashfood Zones located inside their store of choice.

Other retailers using Flashfood include GIANT, Meijer, Price Rite, Tops, Stop & Shop, Family Fare and Martin’s Markets.
