Strong deli sales have helped drive big growth at Weis Markets Inc.

Second quarter sales at the Sunbury, Pennsylvania-based chain totaled $876.6 million, 20 percent more than in the second quarter of 2016. Weis’s operating income rose 15.2 percent in the quarter, and net income was up 21 percent.

It’s also the 13th consecutive quarter Weis has seen comparable store sales gains.

"During this period our sales and net income benefited from the strong performance of our pharmacy and deli foodservice departments, sustained and varied promotions throughout our seven state market area and increased store level efficiencies and expense controls,” Weis’s chairman and CEO, Jonathan Weis, says in a news release.

Weis Markets operates 204 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and West Virginia.
