Donna Barley of Publix Super Markets Inc. won the 20th annual Cake Decorating Challenge at the Dairy-Deli-Bake Seminar & Expo in Atlanta, GA, June 7-9. She competed against two other finalists in the International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association’s annual event. There were 63 entrants from 22 supermarket chains.

Finishing in second place was Katherine Dean of Dorothy Lane Market Inc. in Dayton, OH.

Stephanie Dillon of Hy-Vee Inc., in Lee’s Summit, MO, place third.

There were three phases to the challenge. On Sunday, June 7, each contestant decorated enough cakes to fill one multi-tiered, eight-foot bakery case. On Monday, June 8, each contestant decorated a wedding cake. On Tuesday, June 9, each contestant decorated three cakes, one from each category: special occasion, show theme, and decorator’s choice.

The judges for the event were Luke Bender, Manager of Technical Service, Maplehurst Bakeries, LLC, and Jim Caliendo, Dessert Training Specialist, Rich Products Corporation.
