According to The NPD Group, shifting demographics and behaviors are changing eating habits across the nation. The group has identified five key factors driving this development.
The Millennial approach to food choice and preparation is challenging the way grocery stores sell and market to younger generations. Millennials prefer fresher options and typically shop the outside perimeter where produce and freshly prepared foods can be found.
This population is also eating at home and preparing their own meals more often than other generations. According to The NPD Group, Millennials are cutting back, while those over the age of 50 continue to dine out.
Although the Baby Boomer generation is getting smaller, The NPD Group still considers them to be a large factor in instore sales. This generation is less focused on the latest trends and more focused on wholesome, nutritious lifestyles. As Baby Boomers continue to age, they are seeking out products that provide the greatest health benefits.
As the U.S. Hispanic population continues to grow, so does its influence over consumption patterns. Since this population still follows traditional Hispanic eating habits like cooking from scratch and preparing food on a stove top, this provides instores with an opportunity for bigger sales.
Consumers are increasingly eating alone. Dining experiences are becoming less family oriented and more focused on the individual. The NPD Group reports that 27 percent of households now consist of only one person. This shift will ultimately effect the way new products are developed, packaged and positioned.
The growing demand for fresh and organic foods show no signs of stopping. Younger generations now prefer crisp produce over processed foods. According to The NPD Group, "from 2003 to 2013, consumption of fresh foods — fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, and eggs — grew by 20 percent to over 100 billion eatings and it’s the youngest generations, Generation Z and Millennials driving the trend."
