ANAHEIM, CALIF. — Chino, Calif.-based Hussmann Corporation showcased its array of display merchandisers and refrigeration systems at the International Dairy Deli Bakery Association (IDDBA) show June 4-6.

The company’s newest offering is a self-service island where “nothing stands between the consumer and the product,” said a representative for Hussmann.

According to the company, the four-sided viewable and accessible display increases impulse buys by bringing visibility and attention to promo items anywhere in the store.

This creates a world of opportunity for cross-merchandising.

Chicago-based Circana’s market research expert Jonna Parker gave a great example in her What’s in Store Live workshop at the IDDBA show on June 4. Retailers can place an island with fresh strawberries in the in-store bakery near a display of ready-to-eat angel food cakes with a sign about how to assemble a quick and easy strawberry shortcake.

Hussmann also displayed its customizable Isla merchandisers at the IDDBA show.

“Isla can be configured in 4-sided, 3-sided or 2-sided islands, as well as in-line and stand-alone cases,” the company said. “Looking for a build-your-own merchandiser for a specific area? Isla has every department covered.”

Hussmann’s representative at the IDDBA show shared an example of how the Isla merchandiser can be used for cross-merchandising olives. The retailer could place self-service bins of fresh olives in one part of the merchandiser, and the store could put grab-and-go containers of olives — or other packaged prepared foods that go well with olives — on shelves right next to the self-service bins.

The best part about the Isla merchandiser is that the different parts can be easily and quickly switched out without having to shut down the entire case. To learn more about the different possible configurations, visit the Hussmann website.
