According to a Reuters report, Albertsons Companies Inc. is in advanced talks to acquire Price Chopper for around $1 billion.

The deal would add to the surge of consolidation in the US grocery industry. The report noted that the unnamed sources who confirmed the story cautioned that is is still possible or the deal to fall through. Albertsons and Price Hopper declined to comment.

A smaller, but separate, chain of Price Choppers based in Kansas City, MO, released a statement saying it was not and would not be acquired.

Albertsons is controlled by the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management and runs more than 2,200 supermarkets, making it the second-largest US grocery chain behind Kroger.
