Dollar General announced last week a new, smaller store format that aims to serve busy metropolitan shoppers in a convenient, easy-to-shop manner.

The new concept, tentatively branded DGX, will be approximately 3,400 square feet and is expected to offer consumers items geared toward immediate consumption, including grabd-and-go sandwiches, coffee stations and soda fountains. The stores are also expected to include a limited assortment of grocery offerings, candies and snacks.

Construction of the new store, wich will be located in downtown Nashville, TN, is scheduled to begin before the end of the year with a grand opening scheduled for early 2017. The company is also planning a DGX location in Raleigh, NC, in the first half of 2017.
