WASHINGTON – An animal welfare organization filed a lawsuit against Cargill in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia accusing the company of misleading consumers about its turkey production practices. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT) by Richman Law & Policy under the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act.

In its complaint, FACT accuses Cargill of marketing its Honeysuckle White and Shady Brook Farms turkey products as made using sustainable, environmentally conscious raising practices by farmers that are good stewards of the land.

“In reality, the Products are made from turkeys industrially farmed using unsustainable and environmentally destructive practices, and Cargill regularly fails to comply with even baseline environmental laws,” the court document states.

FACT is not asking the court for damages; however, the group is seeking to end what the organization believes is deceptive marketing and advertising. FACT also sued The Wendy’s Co. under the D.C. consumer protection law in September. The group accused the quick-service chain of misleading consumers about the company’s animal welfare program.
