SMITHFIELD, Va. – Smithfield Foods Inc. said it is shutting down a pork processing facility in San Jose, California, which will result in the lay off of 139 workers.

The meat processor said in a statement that it would offer all employees jobs at other locations along with moving assistance.

“The company is committed to assisting those impacted by this transition with a strong focus on securing job opportunities for all impacted employees – either within the Smithfield network or with other local employers,” Smithfield said. “Smithfield is partnering with the Workforce Development Board to explain all the resources available through CalJOBS and providing assistance to connect impacted employees with other services like Covered California medical benefits.”

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the plant will close on March 13. Seven months ago, Smithfield closed another Bay Area meat packing plant, the Saag’s Specialty Meats facility in San Leandro, California.

According to the company, the San Jose plant produced ready-to-cook bacon and corned beef.
