Midwestern retailer Fareway Stores Inc. is expanding its reach into the Kansas City metro area with its latest acquisition.

Boone, Iowa-based Fareway has purchased Kansas City, Missouri-based McGonigle’s Market, according to an email from McGonigle’s owner Mike McGonigle. McGonigle’s was founded in 1951.

Like Fareway, which operates about 125 stores, McGonigle’s is known for its high-quality meat department.

“As I contemplated the future of McGonigle’s, I felt the need to keep the family owned, independent aspect intact,” McGonigle says. “I wanted to make sure my customers and my people were well taken care of. This is where the new owners fit in. Fareway is family owned and operated.  Their core values align well with my commitment to quality, integrity and personal service. I am confident they will be good stewards of the McGonigle’s legacy.  They have grown a large family of stores throughout the Midwest by providing great quality, service and value.”
