In what it calls a "significant step towards reducing its packaging imprint," Coral Gables, Florida- based banana importer Fyffes has introduced a sustainable, fully recyclable paper banding for use in wrapping its organic bananas in selected markets.

The wrap-around paper band — which is the result of an 18-month development period — is made from 100% Kraft pulp and offers a sustainable alternative to plastic bags.

“We are very excited to introduce our new recyclable and compostable banana banding," says Emma Hunt-Dyuffy, Fyffes' sales and marketing manager. "This is a significant step in realizing one of our sustainability strategic pillars – stewardship for the planet – and has created an opportunity for us to promote the sustainability message amongst our consumers."

The bands provide ample surface for branding and consumer information. Food grade inks are used for print, while adhesives are plant based, not plastic. Being water resistant, the bands remain effective all along the supply chain.
