Whole Foods Market will begin selling its deli rotisserie chickens in more environmentally friendly packaging.

The retail chain is replacing the hard plastic containers it has used with bags that use about 70% less plastic.

Whole Foods also announced it will eliminate plastics straws from its US, UK and Canadian stores and will switch to smaller plastic bags in its produce department. All three initiatives are expected to collectively reduce the company’s use of plastic by 800,000 pounds per year.

“For almost 40 years, caring for the environment has been central to our mission and how we operate,” says A.C. Gallo, president and chief merchandising officer at Whole Foods Market. “We recognize that single-use plastics are a concern for many of our customers, team members and suppliers, and we’re proud of these packaging changes, which will eliminate an estimated 800,000 pounds of plastics annually. We will continue to look for additional opportunities to further reduce plastic across our stores.”
