Walmart saw first-quarter revenue and profit jumps, partially due to the success of online grocery sales, the Bentonville, Arkansas-based company says.

Online grocery sales were the key driver in the company's ecommerce sales rising 37%. This news comes after a report from Coresight Research noted that Walmart is gaining ground on Amazon when it comes to online grocery shopping.

While Amazon is still top dog in the category — 62.5% of shoppers choose the online giant — Walmart is catching up, with more than 37% of those who have purchased food online saying they've made a walmart.com purchase in the last year. That's up from 25% in 2017.

Overall, Walmart posted revenue of $123.9 billion in the first quarter, up 1% from last year.
