Midwest retailer Meijer is expanding a pilot program that allows shoppers to scan bar codes on their phones to speed checkout.

Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Meijer launched the service, called Shop & Scan, at five Grand Rapids area stores and at two stores in Holland, Michigan, in November. Additional stores will be added throughout the year, and by the end of 2018, all Meijer stores should offer the service.

Using the Meijer app, shoppers scan items as they shop. When they’re done shopping, they scan their phone at a self-checkout lane and pay.

“Shop & Scan will make the Meijer experience dramatically faster and more convenient for our customers,” says Terry Ledbetter, chief information officer for Meijer. “This technology joins our curbside pickup and home delivery programs to provide yet another option for Meijer customers to personalize their shopping experience.”
