WESTERVILLE, OHIO — In a move to tighten historical ties between its roots and today’s roster of specialty food products, Lancaster Colony Corp. has changed its name to The Marzetti Co.
With the company name change, Lancaster Colony will drop its LANC ticker symbol on the Nasdaq stock exchange and begin trading under the symbol MZTI. The Marzetti Co. is slated to mark its new identity by ringing the Nasdaq market closing bell on July 10.
“Marzetti is embarking on a transformational chapter and doing so under the name that started it all 130 years ago,” said Dave Ciesinski, president and chief executive officer. “More so than ever, consumers want authenticity and transparency from the companies behind their favorite brands, and the Marzetti name represents our commitment to delivering high-quality, flavorful products that make every meal better.”
Marzetti said the rebrand reflects the specialty food manufacturer’s future while honoring the long history of its namesake brand of dressings and dips. Also, the company's new banner is "Marzetti, The Better Food Company."
The brand’s origins trace back to 1896, when Teresa Marzetti opened an Italian restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, and then grew it into a local favorite best known for its salad dressings. Today, the Marzetti brand is one of the market leaders in refrigerated dressings and the leading brand in produce dips, the company said.
Lancaster Colony acquired Marzetti in 1969 and went on to build a portfolio of family-founded food brands, including Sister Schubert’s dinner rolls, New York Bakery garlic bread and Reames noodles, among others. By 2014, the company had divested the last of its non-food businesses and was positioned as a manufacturer of specialty foods sold in the retail and foodservice channels. More recently, Lancaster Colony entered into licensing agreements to sell popular restaurant brands at retail, including Olive Garden, Chick-fil-A, Buffalo Wild Wings, Arby’s, Subway and Bibibop (dressings, sauces and/or dips) and Texas Roadhouse (mini rolls).
Other retail brands in the company’s portfolio include Girard’s and Cardini’s (salad dressings), Inn Maid and Amish Kitchens (egg noodles), Chatham Village (croutons) and Romanoff (caviar).
“While Lancaster Colony will always be an important part of our heritage, we believe the Marzetti name is critical to positioning ourselves in today’s food industry and communicating the value we deliver for customers and shareholders alike,” Ciesinski said.
