KANSAS CITY, MO. — Supermarket Perimeter’s webinar, Future of Prepared Foods: Convenience, Value and Packaging Trends, sponsored by Harpak-ULMA Packaging, is now available on demand.

The webinar covers insights about generational grocery shopper habits and perceptions surrounding fresh perimeter prepared foods and packaged, case-ready meats and seafood, from a national online survey organized by Cypress Research.

“By better understanding today’s consumer trends shaping these areas of the grocery store, it allows retailers and suppliers the opportunity to respond with an eye to increasing traffic and purchases in the future,” said Marjorie Hellmer, president of Cypress Research.

A big focus of the webinar was what is already working for retailers versus what is preventing consumers from purchasing prepared foods and case-ready proteins.

The survey found a divide between older and younger generations’ reasons for purchasing or not purchasing.

“I’m struck by the fairly big differences between, on the one hand, Gen X and Boomers, and, on the other, Millennials and Gen Z, when it comes to convenience and time savings,” said Andy Nelson, managing editor of Supermarket Perimeter. “That could be a real eye opener for retailers in terms of how to target those demographics differently.”

The webinar also discussed what consumers want from packaging regarding convenience, appearance and sustainability. The survey found younger consumers not only want more sustainable packaging but are willing to pay a higher price for it.

“What we have seen over the last few years is I would say a pretty dramatic shift in this data right here, said Carlo Bergonzi, product manager, Tray Seal, Harpak-ULMA Packaging. “It used to be, 95% of consumers want a sustainable package, but 95% are not willing to pay more for it, and that's obviously changing.”
