BATAVIA, ILL. — Grocery store chain Aldi USA recently confirmed that it plans to open more than 225 new locations in 2025 in the next phase of its five-year national growth strategy.
The company said it would be the most stores it opens in one year since entering the US market.
The new stores will start as part of organic growth and converting certain Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores. Through 2027, Aldi expects to convert around 220 Southeastern Grocers locations into new stores for the brand.
“When we announced our acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, we shared that we intended for a meaningful number of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets to continue to operate, and we’re delivering on that promise while also supporting ALDI growth,” said Jason Hart, chief executive officer, Aldi USA. “Over the last year, we’ve seen firsthand how C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers and their teams have continued to deliver great quality, service and value to their customers, and we are confident they will lead the company successfully into its next chapter.”
Another detail of the strategy brought up by Aldi was divesting around 170 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores that are not part of the conversion plan to a consortium that includes C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers senior leadership, and private investors.
“Converting the remaining locations to the Aldi format is critically important to our nationwide commitment to help shoppers fill their carts with quality groceries for less,” Hart said. “As shoppers continue to feel sticker shock at the checkout, the value Aldi delivers can’t be beat.”
Some of the converted Southeastern Grocers held grand openings with around 100 converted locations planned to reopen into Aldi stores by the end of the year.
Along with Southeast expansion, Aldi expects to add more spots in the Northeast and Midwest regions, grow more in the West with more locations in Southern California and Arizona, and enter new areas, like Las Vegas.
In 2024, Aldi opened nearly 120 stores, which increased its US store count to more than 2,400.
