Weis Markets began the conversion of 38 Food Lions supermarket locations this week, according to The Daily Item.
Weis acquired the locations — in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware — earlier this year and plans to complete the conversion process by the end of October.
"Once the conversions are completed over the next two months, we will have nearly doubled our Maryland store count and expanded in to Virginia and Delaware," Kurt Schertle, Weis' CEO, told the Item.
Weis Markets will hire more than 2,000 current Food Lions employees. The company has already converted five Maryland Food Lions locations and will complete four more in the following week, with plans to reopen them on Sept. 23.
